Pathophysiology and Management of Type 1 Diabetes
In this chapter, we will review the basic epidemiology and pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D) before discussing the role of nutrition and exercise therapy. The evidence for use of home glucose monitoring via blood glucose meters and continuous glucose monitors will be presented. We will then examine the medical therapies available for treatment of T1D, including insulin and insulin analogues, synthetic amylin (pramlintide), and off-label medications. An approach to designing and optimizing the insulin therapy regimen will be discussed.
