Fat Distribution and Diabetes Mellitus

WithDanae A. Delivanis, Michael D. Jensen

The prevalence of diabetes in the United States is on the rise, with a projected increase of 54%, to more than 54.9 million Americans with diabetes by 2030. 1 Although there are many risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2DM), including age, race, pregnancy, stress, medications, genetics, and family history, the single best predictor of T2DM is obesity. Almost 90% of people with T2DM are overweight or obese, and it is clear that the increase in the prevalence of diabetes has paralleled the increase in obesity prevalence—approximately 60% of US adults are now overweight or obese. 2
