ABSTRACT

This chapter explores two of the major themes that have emerged from the international body of literature about Western mainstream news media coverage of Muslims: news media coverage that positions Muslims as the ‘others’ in Western countries and some of the impacts of problematic reporting, including those that contribute to social isolation. It does so because the themes in this chapter, along with the theoretical frameworks discussed in Chapter 3, were used to underpin the interviews with Australian and New Zealand journalists and journalism educators discussed in Chapter 6 and to develop the transformative approach to journalism that is at the heart of this book.
