Journalists’, educators’ and Muslims’ views of the reportage of Islam and Muslims

This chapter explores the findings of interviews with journalists and journalism educators from Australia and New Zealand. We examine journalists– views about why some Western mainstream news media coverage of stories about Muslims can be problematic, identifying that newsroom culture, news values and a failure to apply basic journalistic principles to stories about Muslims are key factors. In this context, the types of resources that would help to address this and better inform journalists– approaches to reporting are also discussed.
