ABSTRACT

In this chapter we use the Transformative Journalism Model to analyse two news stories that cover different aspects about women and veiling in Canada. In teasing out different aspects of the stories we find that women are central actors. In a febrile political environment where veiling had become a hot button election issue, and against the backdrop of media bias against Muslims, this stands in contrast to the dominant ways women and veiling has been portrayed by some mainstream Western news media. They offer useful lessons to journalists in shifting the focus away from the ‘us and them’ dichotomy and Orientalist frames.
