ABSTRACT

The safe navigation of an aircraft from a departure airport, across a massive stretch of ocean or land to its final destination is not accomplished by pilots in isolation. Global air traffic management requires an international network of ground- and satellite-based navigation aids, regulations dictating the rules of the sky, and human expertise. The chapter discusses three key considerations in air navigation–communication, surveillance, and navigation, including the technologies, standards, and expectations involved in accomplishing each. It outlines some of the ways in which the aviation industry continues to innovate with respect to the future of air navigation, making specific reference to NextGen and SESAR. The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation is a group representing the providers of global air traffic management and is a great resource for learning more about air navigation service providers (ANSPs). EUROCONTROL is the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation.
