ABSTRACT

In recent decades, mobility has become increasingly important for social and professional integration, with the ability to be mobile having become a key dimension of social position. In the past decade, car ownership and use has been declining in many European cities of over 500,000 inhabitants. This chapter aims to explore this apparent paradox based on a literature review, and outlines three ideal-type future mobility scenarios based on emerging trends. These scenarios suggest that we are on the threshold of radical changes in our relationship to mobility and transport modes.
