ABSTRACT
This historiographical essay surveys historical writing on the period of British rule in Cyprus (1878-1960) in order to set up the relevant background for the appraisal of Robert Holland’s contribution to this field of scholarship. The major milestones of this tradition of historical writing are briefly discussed and the political and ideological factors influencing the course of historical scholarship are pointed out.
