ABSTRACT

Governance discussions in Bangladesh, as elsewhere in the world, were originally steeped in a commitment to an alliance, uncontested since the end of the Cold War, of liberal democracy and market-based economic growth. The chapter focuses on original data derived from a 2010 national household survey commissioned by the Daily Star, the largest circulating English daily newspaper in Bangladesh, and Nielson Bangladesh, a specialised information and measurement company. The survey asked a range of questions about attitudes towards democracy and governance. Regression analysis was performed using the Stata software with robust standard errors calculated using the survey sample frame. The starting point for the analysis is to assess the level of support citizens have for democracy in Bangladesh. The idea of democracy has taken firm root in Bangladesh and the analysis presented here indicates that Bangladesh has also infused the idea of democracy with distinctive and transformative meanings and experiences.
