ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 outlines the problems that this book aims to address. It argues that there are significant difficulties facing clinicians using CBT with adolescents and young adults in routine clinical practice. The first of these is with the diagnostic model. This chapter highlights a lack of reliability and validity, concerns about over-emphasis on individuals and biology, and high levels of stigma. All of this is of particular concern given the developmental processes outlined in Chapter 2. The second problem explored in this chapter is with reduced levels of efficacy in routine clinical practise when compared to research trials. This chapter argues that this is partially attributable to the increasingly complex nature of the CBT landscape. The problems outlined in this chapter are addressed by the fresh approach outlined in Chapter 5.
