ABSTRACT

Five different athletic development stages can be defined in the Athletic Skills Model (ASM) from childhood to adulthood: basic, advanced, transition, performance and elite athletic skills. Each stage is characterized by a specific developmental approach with an appropriate variety of exercises. At each stage these exercises are related to the basic movement skills (BMS), coordinative abilities (CA) and conditions of movement (COM). The sensitive periods in child development can play an important role in the choice of the games, exercises or sports used to enhance talent. Each ASM stage also has a short description of the specific and general forms of behaviour and social development at the related age. This chapter shows the practical relations between a specific theme and goal and the ASM building blocks. Mastering this principle will lead to a balanced set of combinations to put into practice in a well-chosen sport, activity, game or exercise.
