ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how information technologies tools can support contractors when monitoring their refurbishment projects. Refurbishment activities comprise a high proportion of construction industry output in most developed countries. Refurbishment contractors face several challenges in information integration. Compared to the number of published studies about Building Information Modelling (BIM) in new construction, there have been few contributions dealing specifically with refurbishment projects. A UK study of housing refurbishment has found that the two major obstacles to BIM use are the investment needed and the lack of demand from clients. Both contractors and clients need to see benefits that exceed the cost of preparing digital models of existing structures. Linking to the refurbishment contractor's suppliers of goods and services may also be assigned a higher priority than directly tapping into client design information. The chapter discusses the results from a case study carried out in Sweden in 2015.
