ABSTRACT

The Polish Chamber of Foreign Trade (PIHZ) was a national body established under a decree of the 28th September 1949 with a wide range of responsibilities under the communist regime. This chapter discusses the work of the average adjusters office. It explains that responsibility was held for the Maritime Arbitration Court in Gdynia. The decision to establish an average adjusters office at the Polish Chamber of Foreign Trade was taken by the Ministries of Foreign Trade and Shipping, the Polish Chamber of Foreign Trade and the National Insurance Company on 9th March 1951. The increasing carriage of Czechoslovak and DDR cargoes by Polish vessels and through Polish ports in the 1950s created circumstances whereby the International Court of Arbitration for Marine and Inland Navigation was established in Gdynia. By June 1989, the Chamber continued its activities with particular emphasis on the role of experts.
