ABSTRACT

Poland came relatively late to containerisation although there was acceptance of the concept from the mid 1960s. During 1966, work on the containerisation of Polish cargoes continued on two lines: preliminary research into the methods and effects of containerisation and the regulations needed; gradual introduction of the new system into ports and POL. February 1970 brought a special meeting organised by the Central Board of International Transport and Forwarding and the Central Railway Technique Development and Research Centre to consider the introduction and development of containers in Poland. Policy planning for containerisation continued at the Instytut Morski in Gdansk. Poland's late entry into the highly competitive and expensive container market was one of the reasons for its financial failures of the 1980s and ultimately a part cause of the industry's major problems of that time.
