ABSTRACT

Northeast Asia has played an important role in the economic and social development of the Asia Pacific region, and in the global context. Air transport is essential in facilitating the movement of people and goods between countries in the region. Air transport market in Northeast Asia has grown faster than any other world region during the past two decades, both in terms of passengers and cargo. Among the Northeast Asian countries, Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong hold the key to the shaping of the air transport system in the region in terms of geography and population. The chapter discusses the development of air transport industry in these countries as well as their major carriers. Boeing predicts that China will become the world’s largest commercial aviation market outside the United States in the next 20 years.
