ABSTRACT

A look at trends in unemployment over time shows that men are most definitely the main beneficiaries of economic recovery during periods of economic improvement, including in a context where unemployment is very high, persistent and lasting. If reason in terms of status of labour market participation, need to take a look at the fringes where we can distinguish employment from unemployment and from not being in the labour market. This broader view enables us to go beyond narrow analyses of unemployment. International comparative studies have encountered the need for measurements that would complete the gross indicator for unemployment given by harmonised findings. When measurements of unemployment are adjusted by these corrective measures, the discrepancy found is nonetheless considerably greater for women, in comparison with overall unemployment figures. Underneath the question of the sensitivity of unemployment to economic fluctuations there lies another, somewhat different question.
