ABSTRACT

The 'hybrid view' has emerged from the inadequacy of the negative view in explaining the goals and the subjective uses of freedom. The first version of the hybrid view develops the objective and rational aspect of free choice, whereas the second version explores the subjective and moral aspect, related with free agency. In order to understand whether the first version of the hybrid view can solve the paradox of the contented slave, this chapter focus on the example of the submissive wife. The chapter investigates who is free agent, which is explained by the second version of the hybrid conception of freedom. The hybrid account of freedom faces the same problem as the negative conception of freedom; it has a tendency to reduce freedom to its subjective aspect by associating freedom with doing whatever one values.
