ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 explores Lönberg-Holm´s tenure as director of research and design from 1932 to 1960 at Sweets Catalog- an essential American information system for industrial building components, where he reformulated its reorganization with the Czech designer Ladislav Sutnar during the World War II. In the 1930´s, the growth of Sweets was fed by the invention of synthetic materials and the trend in prefabricated housing, that Fuller called repro-shelter. During the war, SSA members contributed their expertise in prefabrication techniques to international mobilizations and reconstruction efforts in CIAM, as repro-shelter transformed from a utopian ideal to an emergency response.
