ABSTRACT

This chapter blends field work and textual analysis of the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada in order to identify the nascent vocabulary of technoliberalism. Technoliberalism conceptually marks an intensification of neoliberalism through computational technology; as a relatively new ideological formation, tracing the terms of technoliberalism can assist with the rhetorical criticism of new, digital technologies. Specifically, it explores the role that the words innovation, precision, and connectedness play in forming terminological clusters upon which technoliberal rhetoric is built. Each term is historically situated and critically interrogated, identifying key questions that might motivate resistance to technoliberalism.
