ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates the attempt to conserve the forests of the Okwangwo Division of the Cross River National Park, based on the principles of conservation-with-development (Chapters 1 and 4). It reviews and evaluates the practice of conservation-with-development, especially by examining the pilot phase in the Mbe Mountains conservation and tourism zone (1991-1994) and the European Union-funded Okwangwo Programme (1994-1998). The objective is to explore the extent to which the design and implementation of such initiatives effectively stabilised and checked forest loss, especially in the Okwangwo Division where there is a good history of local resource use and management.
