ABSTRACT

Feedback can be intrinsic such as the information derived from the feeling of a movement, noting the position and motion of limbs, and so forth. Intrinsic feedback occurs as a natural result of the movement. Feedback can be extrinsic, such as information obtained from coaching comments, video images and watching oneself in a mirror. Extrinsic feedback is basically coaching – feedback that arises above and beyond that of the natural result of a movement. Intrinsic and extrinsic feedback is themselves composed of two further types of information: knowledge of performance (KP), and knowledge of results (KR). Intrinsic KP includes noting the motion and a position of limbs while intrinsic KR is the self-talk based on information obtained from the environment such as the sound of a take-off or landing and is usually outcome-related. Extrinsic feedback usually serves as a motivator. In fact, even false positive feedback tends to enhance motivation for learning better than negative feedback.
