ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the factors that underpin an athlete's motivation and how coaches can enhance the motivation levels of their athletes. It also contains the following information: a definition of motivation, the differences between extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation and a motivation, the hierarchical model of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, age-related differences in motivation, coach influence on motivation and enhancing motivation: resistance. Motivation is concerned with why people conduct certain behaviours and associated with enjoyment, dropout rates, and performance. Female athletes may be more intrinsically motivated than male athletes. Coaches directly influence motivation through their behavior and communication, although the impact of the coach appears to vary depending on the age of the athlete. Coaches can enhance motivation by applying the resistance principles to their coaching practice. The chapter presents some practice exam questions, critical thinking questions and case study questions to enhance motivation among athletes.
