ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins with a discussion of theories of transformation and social change. World System Theory, the Marxist theory of social change, and the neoclassical economic model of transition will be contrasted with an essentially Weberian approach to social transformations. The book attempts to make a comparative analysis of market transition as an important element of the post-Soviet transformation process. It includes a brief comparison of structural and cultural features of Belarus and the Baltic states against the comparative background of Poland. The book also deals with various models of the market and their perceptions in late Soviet and post-Soviet societies. It discusses social and economic factors shaping the first stages of policy decisions relating to market reforms in the post-Soviet states. The book further examines the actual implementation of market reforms in post-Soviet countries.
