ABSTRACT
The 2016 US presidential election engendered considerable debate about what President Donald Trump would mean for US society and its political system as well as the country’s relationship with its international partners including its continental neighbors. The future of the United States’ borders with Mexico and Canada were inevitably part of this debate given Trump’s repeated promises to build a “great, great wall” along the Mexican border and his more general assertions that the US “must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.”
