ABSTRACT

The US-Canada border is significant. Throughout its history, it has played a role in providing for the security of the neighboring countries and has affected their economic relations and their identities. Diversity is also a key feature of the border. It looks and functions differently at different times but also at the same time in different locations and even in the same location, depending upon what or who is crossing the border. The US-Canada border is very different depending upon where individuals are seeking to cross. The border crossing points in sparsely populated areas are quite different from the crossing points in much of the Great Lakes region. The experience of crossing the border is different depending upon whether or not the individual concerned is a ‘trusted’ traveler or shipper, or whether or not they are a citizen of the US or Canada.
