ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The primary objective of this book is to illuminate the position of women in non-traditional employment in Northern Ireland. Secondly, it sets the 'micro' areas outlined against a broader 'macro' image of the situation. Thirdly, the book compares the position of women in non-traditional areas of employment, where they continue to hold only 'token status', to that of women in male-dominated professions. Finally, it illuminates many of the structural constraints which have, or must be overcome by women intent on non-traditional training and/or employment. The book seeks to emphasise the fact that women, as capable agents, do have the potential for transforming existing gender relations, particularly within the education, training and employment systems. The agency and practice of women is a central theme of the book. It explores the degree of change which women have induced in the gendered division of labour.
