ABSTRACT

Development of an efficient, economically viable bioenergy crop production industry in the marginal lands will take time. It is essential that breeding programs pay close attention to screening salt-, drought-, and heat-tolerant genotypes of multipurpose bioenergy crops from available germplasm. In addition, development of cultural practices and irrigation technology for marginal lands with low-quality water is imperative. Finally, development of optimal energy crop agronomic systems will likely require the use of modern molecular biology tools to generate plants with elite traits for biofuel production.
