ABSTRACT
In order to observe the performance of CEA in villages and counties in which it has been adopted I travelled to seven villages and two counties across the Chinese countryside. I visited four winners of the UNEP Global 500 Award: Liu Min Ying in Daxing County, Beijing Municipality on nine occasions between 1992 and 1997; Xiao Zhang Zhuang, in Yingshang County, Anhui Province each summer between 1993 and 1997; He Heng in Tai County, Jiangsu Province in the summers of 1993,1995, 1996 and 1997; and Teng Tou in Fenghua county, Zhejiang Province in the summers of 1995 and 1997. I also visited three further villages that had adopted CEA: Dou Dian in Fangshan district, Beijing Municipality in the summers of 1995, 1996 and 1997; Qian Wei in Chongming Dao, Shanghai Municipality in the summers of 1995 and 1997; and Tie Xi in Mishan County, Heilongjiang Province in summer 1995. Additionally, I visited two ecological agricultural counties, Da Zu in Sichuan Province and Simao in Yunnan Province in the summer of 1995. My researches therein are described in the case-studies following.
