ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the policy and theoretical issues related to the links between administrative reform and economic development. It consists of two parts: an overview of theoretical and conceptual issues that are important to the connection between administrative reform and economic development, and a brief summary of research arguments and findings. The important role of government in the modern economic system has been well recognized and accepted in the literature of public finance, development economics, and political economy. The importance of public sector management to economic development is further explored in the review of literature related to the fields of development administration and administrative reforms. As emphasized in both fields, it is clear that good governance is critical to economic development, especially for developing and economic-transition countries.
