ABSTRACT

An attempt to answer the question, “How did they live?” would have involved an examination of these persons for their diet and state of nutrition, a task beyond our resources, but if the question be interpreted to mean, “On what sources of income did they rely?” some interesting information can be obtained from the records. The tables below make clear the extent to which these families were supported by unemployment benefit, by other social services, and how far the other earners were a drain on the family income or contributed more than the cost of keeping them on the poverty line standard. It will be seen that in 5 per cent of the 130 families whose head was unemployed, no unemployment benefit was received on his account, in 17 per cent of the families other earners were without work, but that in only 3 per cent did the other earners receive incomes less than the sum needed to maintain them on the poverty standard.
