ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the rationale behind the approach used to elaborate the regional technology policy concept and the various effects it is having on Styrian regional technology policy in general as well as on the collaborative behaviour of regional actors in the economic, the administrative and the political sphere. It outlines Styria's economic background and briefly presents the empirical basis and the strategic orientation of the technology policy concept and gives some concrete examples of collaborative projects conducted and new organisational frameworks established. The chapter discusses how the implementation is influenced by an experimental approach and can be understood as a process of 'learning in developing the results'. The technology policy concept for Styria, which mainly focuses on increasing innovative activities of regional economic actors by means of improving their collaborative behaviour, was finalised in autumn 1995 and published in early spring 1996.
