ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the case studies across sub-Saharan Africa with successful and unsuccessful results from ecotourism development. It demonstrates both successful and unsuccessful results from ecotourism development. The chapter stimulates scholars and practitioners to work together to formulate applied ecotourism research and policy advocacy, which will move ecotourism forward in Africa and help overcome ecotourism constraints. It illustrates the ecotourism challenges that remain in Africa in the form of governance, policy, and structural constraints. Applied research is therefore, needed to examine the heterogeneity of regions where ecotourism operates in Africa, and the complex local processes that affect local capacity improvement in ecotourism. The chapter also demonstrates progress made in establishing pro-ecotourism policies in Africa. Market-driven ecotourism policies have challenged ecotourism in Africa. Such policies are valuable to the private sector and have led to the most lucrative ecotourism operations. There was mixed reaction toward the value of harmonizing ecotourism policies across regions in Africa.
