ABSTRACT

The Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy aims to stop and reverse the degradation of biological and landscape diversity assets in Europe. The Strategy's organs regarded the Action Theme to be a world priority and received special attention in the policies of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Council of Europe and the European Union. The European Conference of Ministers responsible for Regional Planning (CEMAT) adopted a programme of activities focusing on forward-looking analysis of long-term, political, economic and ecological trends and developments. An international Colloquy on the protection of coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea, attended by many specialists on coastal problems, was held in September 1994 in Tirana, Albania, in advance of European Nature Conservation Year (ENCY) 1995. The Taormina Conference was a meeting of parliamentarians and representatives of regions and local authorities from all over Europe and from southern Mediterranean countries.
