ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the background to the potential for using databases and networking by property professionals in the area of coastal and marine resource management. It represents part of a wider research project completed in August 1997 and as yet not published. A concept of 'ecologically sustainable development', developed mainly from UN Conferences has started to provide a broad framework for developing coastal and marine management systems. Coastal protection, large scale clearing, urban development, and aquaculture have led to valuation problems in the areas. The sectorial approach to managing below low water mark is so complex that there are issues that affect all property professionals. The valuable role of the Chartered Surveyor in Marine Resource Management may be simply swamped by the vast number of organisations in these databases being produced by networking organisations.
