ABSTRACT

When Krupskaya reported to Lenin about her altercation with Stalin, the pressure proved unbearable and Lenin's physical strength broke down. Shaken by high fever and pain, he presently suffered his third stroke. Attempts were made by Stalinist historiographers to predate the time of Lenin's third stroke and that the de-Stalinizers were endeavouring to postdate it. Normally, Lenin should have been put under constant medical supervision as soon as the change was noted but it does not seem as though the doctors modified their routine of daily visits. It is unlikely that just four days after a third and paralysing stroke competent doctors would make an optimistic prognosis suggesting the possibility of the patient's early return to work. The doctors asserted that both his speech and his motility were improving. In reality, there were serious pulmonary complications and the kidneys and the heart were affected. When Lenin was unable to make himself understood, he often broke out in rages.
