ABSTRACT

The behavioural approach to teaching is based on behavioural psychology, which rests upon a number of general assumptions. If teaching is about changing behaviour then the role of the teacher is, quite simply, to bring about changes in the behaviour of the children in her class. The basic model embodying the crucial elements of the behavioural approach is known as the three-term analysis of behaviour or the ABC model. ABC is a convenient way of remembering the constituents of the three-term analysis of behaviour and the logical sequence of antecedent, behaviour and consequence. When teachers want to teach a child something new, or to encourage him to behave in a certain way more frequently than he normally does, it is important that they ensure that he is positively reinforced every time he behaves as they want him to. This normally leads to rapid learning and is known as continuous reinforcement.
