ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the neglect of traditional African medicine is part of a general trend to suppress traditional, indigenous knowledge and wisdom in favour of western exogenous knowledge, leading to an identity crisis and a poverty of the mind. It explains the idea of Paxherbal as a tool for changing the concept of traditional medicine from an esoteric practise by mysterious, fearsome old medicine men to that of a useful, profitable, rational and explicable venture. The goal of Paxherbal is to change the face of African traditional medicine. Paxherbal is the registered business trademark of Pax Herbal Clinic and Research Laboratories. African traditional medicine was referred to as 'pagan medicine' and traditional healers referred to as pagan doctors. The government, private companies and non-governmental organizations invest relatively huge sums of money in promoting further research in the herbal medicine.
