ABSTRACT

To meet lofty objectives, colleges and universities must work diligently to provide curricular and co-curricular opportunities in order to prepare students for successful entry into increasingly diverse and multicultural workforces. With this context, this chapter highlights strategies for student affairs professionals to enhance student learning through global engagement. While student affairs professionals have long heralded the benefits of student engagement, participation in certain educational activities such as service-learning, research partnerships with faculty, and study abroad have been designated as high-impact practices (HIPs) as they engage students in activities that elevate learning. Active engagement in these experiences allows students to view alternative perspectives and creates a better understanding of self within a global context. In this manner, student affairs professionals must work diligently to ensure that our campuses offer welcoming and receptive learning environments through assessment of our campus climates as well as thoughtful, sustained programmatic efforts to all students-international and domestic.
