ABSTRACT

Veterans have as many reasons for utilizing their educational benefits via the GI Bill as they had for enlisting in the United States Armed Services. This chapter aids the staff and faculty members working with this student veteran population to better understand its learning needs and support services appropriate to foster veteran student success. The first step to support student veterans is making it as easy as possible for them to determine who and where to go to obtain services. With the passage of educational acts, such as the post-9/11 GI Bill, colleges and universities have committed to the education of an increasing number of recently discharged service members. Seen as an asset to college communities, yet often misunderstood, veterans bring varied needs when they enroll in postsecondary education. Veterans need to learn how to communicate with their civilian peers, navigate a non-hierarchical organization, and discover what their next life role will be.
