ABSTRACT

This chapter explores areas of childhood that impact our ideas on discipline, emotional health, education and more. The preferred style of parenting does not necessarily mean that our parents were mean, cruel or unkind. It does, however, indicate a strong parental desire to make the rules and enforce the rules. The discipline style of parenting recognizes that treating children with dignity and respect, setting firm and realistic boundaries, offering choices and following through on what is said ensures children will grow up with a strong sense of right and wrong, with the courage to take responsibility for mistakes, make amends when necessary and learn from experience. The majority of the time our parents were consistent, level-headed and reasonable, they believed that one were capable and had faith in their ability to navigate our life with guidance and support. Now more than ever, a child's education is a major focus in a parent's life.
