ABSTRACT

Many conducting texts often include photos of conductors with fixed/or static Movable-Masses. This is especially true when discussing posture or "starting positions" for conducting. When drawing a straight line, there is a secret that has a direct correlation to conducting. Conductors sometimes equate the additional sensation of pressure with tension. The investigation of drawing is intended to provide a visual and an objective understanding of where gesture comes from, how an artist communicates it and how it is visually perceived. This chapter focuses on the two drawing methods, namely gesture drawing and figure drawing. It concerns the parallels between drawing and expressive physical movement, the approach that an artist takes in the process of creating a drawing might also suggest strategies for rehearsing that are worth the consideration. The chapter looks at a few of the fundamentals underlying Tai Chi. The study of Tai Chi is first and foremost the study of moving weight without creating tension.
