ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the conducting instrument — body. It presents some information that will expand the conception of how the body coordinates. The activity of simply moving the arms is, in reality, a whole-body gesture. It is impossible to separate the movement of the arm from corresponding movements in the torso, if efficient and natural motion is the goal. Two common muscles that move the arm but could be considered part of the torso are the pectoral muscles and the "lats" or latissimus dorsi muscles. Everything is always moving, including the Movable-Masses of the torso. The body organizes itself according to the gesture, balancing and counterbalancing Movable-Masses in relation to soft feet. If this natural flow is allowed while conducting, the musical gestures will resonate through the entire being and will appear more authentic, compelling and honest.
