ABSTRACT

This chapter examines aspects of performance theory that will allow the body to remain available. A performance is made up of a series of moments strung together like the beads on a string. In the theatre, one of the things that gets in the way is the obligation to perform. The chapter explores the fundamentals and key concepts behind acting and performance theory. Acting is about the process of being authentic, truthful and honest while being engaged in a conversation with another actor in front of an audience. Perhaps it sounds silly to suggest that a conductor might be involved in the audience-centric process of indication rather than being focused on the members of the ensemble in front of them. Engaged in the simultaneity of conducting, the conductor pursues the objectives that are a result of his or her preparation.
