Conference episcope

History and theology 1
ByBrian E. Beck

Beginning from the ecumenically accepted view that in Methodism the annual Conference exercises a form of episcopal oversight over the church, the chapter traces the history of the Conference in that regard and the claims made for its authority, arguing that only since 1998–9 can it be truly said that the Conference, composed more or less equally of lay and ordained, exercises corporate episcope over the whole church, and offers a theological rationale for the practice.
