ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses an integrated perspective as it analyses different aspects of female experience in family businesses (FBs) centred on the daughters' role and position, how they live their experience in the FB, what role they play and how they are satisfied/dissatisfied about their role in the FB. It presents a literature overview on daughters' role in FB succession. The chapter explores the daughters' experiences within the FB in order to describe possible profiles that they may assume in the succession process. In the perspective, three important empirical findings have emerged, providing an important contribution to the theory discussion on the topics. First, evidence shows that not all daughters with a leadership role show motivations and ambitions. Second, based on our results, daughters' exclusion from FB succession still persists. Third, our analysis shows that the marginal role of daughters in FBs is not always the result of gender discrimination, as some daughters can be satisfied with their secondary position.
