ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the work of the higher education (HE) Data & Information Improvement Programme (HEDIIP) and the extensive engagement and dialogue conducted through the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) training seminars. The HEDIIP programme was established, and initial work identified the true extent of data collections across the sector and investigated the scope for standardization and rationalization of this landscape. The national HEDIIP programme in the UK launched a major strand of work around data management and governance capabilities. Some HE institutions are addressing these issues by plugging into existing organizational governance systems and processes and by enlisting support from the internal audit function. Expert domain knowledge is another important aspect of an individual's capability to fulfill a strategic planning role, and one that has become more challenging in diverging and ever more complicated HE marketplace.
