ABSTRACT

Global positioning system (GPS) and inertial navigation system information is available on mobile devices to motorists, other travelers, and system operators. Modern traffic and transportation management systems concern themselves with the safety of travelers, efficiency in moving travelers from one point to another, and the environmental impacts of the transportation modes. Approved types of traffic control devices suitable for installation on streets, highways, bikeways, and private roads open to public travel are found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) published by the US Federal Highway Administration. The MUTCD is recognized as the US national standard for all traffic control devices installed on any street, highway, bikeway, or private road open to public travel. Any traffic control device design or application provision contained in the MUTCD is considered to be in the public domain. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
