ABSTRACT

Lake Titicaca is the largest freshwater lake in South America and the highest of the large lakes in the world as it sits at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters above sea level. Waters from Lake Titicaca are evenly distributed between Bolivia and Peru, countries that agreed to follow a joint ownership model to ensure integrated management of the hydrological basin, which includes the Desaguadero River, and Lakes Poopó, Copaisa Salt and Titicaca (the TDPS System). The three main institutions that operate the TDPS System area: the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Planning, in Bolivia, the Peruvian Development Institute, in Peru, and the Binational Autonomous Authority of Lake Titicaca.
