ABSTRACT

The primary aim of this section is to describe some ways of navigating the multiple approaches to leadership and to offer some arguments in favor of transformative leadership as a theory that may offer promise for deep and meaningful change. Certainly, the proliferation of leadership theories is not new and educators have at their disposal an array of approaches such as bureaucratic, hierarchical, distributed, transformational, democratic, servant, authoritarian, collaborative, or transformative leadership — all intended to improve the organizations in which the leader works Each leader has demonstrated considerable self-knowledge as well as awareness of the distinct VUCA features of their very diverse contexts. Finally, to fulfill their understanding of the moral purposes of schooling, transformative leaders require the courage that permits them to become advocates of equitable change and educational and societal transformation. Indeed, transformative leadership embodies the new VUCA characteristics of vision, understanding, clarity, and agility.
