ABSTRACT

Id this chapter we analyze the structural transformati cm of the

agrarian system in India in the period following independence. Since

19 7^* several important developments ha^e contributed towards the trans-

formation of India's agrarian economy* Hiere are unmistakable signs that

the agrarian system-in terms of its form of productive organization and

relations, as well as the material conditions of production««has been re®

spending to these influences·* The central feature of this système

change is a process of differentiation within the agrarian society and

economy· The groundwork for this analysis was laid in the preceding

chapter where the agrarian structure of the 1950*s was expressed as a

dichotomy between viable and non-viable households· The dichotomy was

based upon essential differences in conditions of economic reproduction·

In this chapter5 we analyze how this differentiation evolved over time.
